Fleurieu Peninsula local information

The Fleurieu Peninsula is an ideal day trip and holiday destination just south of Adelaid. Encompassing the McLaren Vale and beaches stretching all the way south to Cape Jervis as well as the Murray Mouth and Hindmarsh Island and sloping hillsides and picturesque country towns to the east.

Named after the French wanderer Charles Pierre Claret, Comte de Fleurieu by the French sailor Nicholas Baudin who was navigating the waters off the mouth of the Murray River at the same time as Matthew Flinders.

The Fleurieu region is home to many artists and crafts people who exhibit their works in local galleries and weekend markets.

The region is home to a variety of wildlife in the form of fairy penguins, whales, seals, dolphins, sea lions and penguins, over 60 cellar doors and a variety of produce including yabbies, venison and crayfish. Or, stay a while and walk sections the extensive nature trails or dive the ex-HMAS Hobart, Australia's most accessible and exciting war wreck.
