Portarlington reviewPortarlington is located just 20 minutes drive from Geelong, and approx 1.5 hours from Melbourne. Situated on the Bellarine peninsula, it makes for a great escape. Portarlington is a quiet coastal town that comes alive in summer, as tourists flock from near and far to enjoy a piece of Portarlingtons charm. With safe shallow waters, local cafes and restuarants, fishing, activities, and lots more to see and do, not to mention those fantastic bay views!.
Brief History- This portion of the coast was named by Flinders about 1802, in 1851 the first sale of town lots occured and in 1854 Newcombe street became the centre business area of the town. in 1857 the popular flour mill was built- which is still standing and now open for inspection as a museum. in 1859 the pier was constructed and then extended out in 1870. in 1887 the Grand Hotel began construction, and in 1910 the rotunda was built and used for the local brass band recitals. Attractions & eventsLocal markets are held in Portarlington, at Parks Hall every last Sunday of the Month from 9am-2pm.
