Locality

PORT MACDONNELL is South Australia's Rock Lobster Capital, just 28 kilometres south of Mt Gambier. A popular destination for a relaxed family holiday, it marks the western end of the Great Ocean Road and the beginning of the Limestone Coast. Click on 'Location map' above for the exact location.

Surrounded by rugged coastline, Port MacDonnell is a charming town (pop 700) full of maritime history and places of interest, including The Customs House, the Old Lighthouse, An Historic Mural, A Petrified Forest, Adam Lindsay Gordon's Cottage, a Penguin Colony and The Maritime Museum. Activities include boating, swimming (beach), diving through underwater kelp forests and shipwrecks, tennis, sailing. Fishing options include jetty, breakwater, rock, offshore and surf.

There is a children's playground on the foreshore, minutes from the cottage.

A Deli, Newsagent, Cafe and Scuba Centre is also within walking distance.

Night entertainment can be found at the local pub, which serves meals, a restaurant/bistro and the golf and football clubrooms on weekends.

Day trips include the famous Coonawarra Wine region, the heritage listed Naracoorte Caves, historic Mt Gambier and the splendid Blue Lake.

The Port MacDonnell Bayside Festival is held annually on the first Sunday in January.

You can buy fresh cooked or live lobsters in Port MacDonnell from October to May!
