“Great location – wish we could have stayed longer as this is a great place to unwind, Veronica and Stephen Whitter, Warrandyte, VIC.”
“This is such a lovely place to stay. Very clean and fresh. The view is outstanding! David and Caterine Cornell, Lindfield, NSW”
Tasman PeninsulaSaltwater River is one of seven fascinating historic locations that reveal the 19th century convict life. Follow Tasmania's Convict Trail including Port Arthur Historic Site and the fascinating Coal Mines Historic Site at Saltwater River. Described as "the hidden treasure of the Tasman Peninsula, it is certainly as interesting as Port Arthur and given that it is common to visit the ruins and be on your own for hours (something which never occurs at Port Arthur) it has a sense of desolation and isolation which makes the experience powerful and poignant." SMH February 8, 2004.
Nearby Tasman National Park is an area of great beauty and natural diversity, including some of the most stunning coastal scenery anywhere in Australia. Not suprisingly, the park offers some of the best walks - see Walks 44 to 48 of the 60 Great Walks of Tasmania.
Experience the southern hemisphere's tallest sea-cliffs and see exciting marine wildlife and birdlife with Tasman Island Cruises or come face to face with the Tasmanian Devil at the Tasmanian Devil Conservation Park. HeritageSaltwater River Probation Station was the first probation station established on the Tasman Peninsula, with men arriving on the 29th March 1841 from the ship the 'British Sovereign'. The station was to be an agricultural station and the men, once their rough huts were ready, were set to breaking up the ground for farming activities. In time the station occupied some 300 acres, and was proficient in growing grain and vegetables for other centres, such as Port Arthur. The chief vegetables were potatoes, cabbages and turnips.
