Thank you very much for this lovely, cosy, "homy" place. We all have enjoyed... the house with its charm and comfort, the garden with all its beauty, the birds, your wonderful unique mural, the swing ...and everything for the children. Nela and Juri were so happy when they saw you coming with the bird seeds and you let them help you feeding the birds. A.A.N. & J.R., Switzerland, 12/09 Thank you for your hospitality & great tourist suggestions. I., B., K. & Z. B., N.Z., 7/10
Locality
Homebush West is approx. 15 km. west of the City and 3 km. from the Sydney Olympic Park at Homebush.
Our railway station is Flemington, just a 5-minute walk from "Mum's House". Trains run frequently, and it takes 30-40 minutes to get to Circular Quay - $5.60 offpeak return adult fare, $2.70 for children. (Also, 7 buses a day run to and from the station if you don't fancy the Flemington station steps; they will take you to Strathfield where there are ramps and lifts to the platform.)
We're about 10 minutes by private transport from the Olympic Park, or you can walk it in 30 brisk minutes! Take the train to one station west from here and change to the Sprint train that takes you directly to Olympic Park (20-30 min).
We're just 2 stations from Strathfield, a central interchange, from where you can get trains to just about anywhere in NSW.
If you can drive to Homebush Bay Wharf, the Rivercat ferry commute to the City is quite magical. (Or take the train to Parramatta and catch the same ferry from there.)
"Mum's House" is about a 25-minute, $56. drive from the International Airport by taxi, or if just one person is travelling with little luggage, a $16.40 train ride is a viable option.
Some indicative public transport fares (return, adult, offpeak; children under 4 are free, over 4 up to 16 are approx. half):
Flemo - Central - $5.20
Flemo - all City stations (Museum, St. James, Town Hall, Circular Quay)-$5.40
Flemo - Olympic Park $4.40 (wkly - $25.)
Flemo - Parramatta - $4.40 ($3.20 single)
Flemo - Bondi Beach - $10.40(includes bus)
Flemo - Manly - $18.60(includes ferry)
Parramatta - Circular Quay (by Rivercat) - $7.70 (one-way, any time)
Homebush Bay - Circular Quay (by Rivercat) - $6.60 (one-way, any time)
There are several attractive low-cost fare schemes (eg, $48 weekly Travel Pass that covers trains, buses, ferries within the "green" zone) depending on the time frame and geography of travel you wish to undertake.
Local Attractions
The Sydney Olympic Park at Homebush was the site of the 2000 Olympics, and now is a hub for many sporting, and other, events. There are 2 stadiums, the marvellous Sydney Olympic Aquatic Centre (you'll never get the children out of there!), the very busy Sydney Olympic Sports Centre, and the lovely Bicentennial Park, home to thousands of migratory birds, the Golden Orb Spider and other fascinating, harmless Australian wildlife. You can rent bikes (& helmets) there as well.
Go to the Sydney Olympic Park's web site to see what events are taking place at the Athletic Centre, the Golf Centre, the Sports Hall, the Tennis Centre, and the myriad other venues.
We're just 2 minutes' walk from the Hudson Park Golf Course, an 18-hole, par 60 accredited course, or 5 minutes' drive from Strathfield Golf Club, which is par 71.
A 38-lane AMF bowling centre is just a 5-minute drive away.
Rosehill Race Track is a 15-minute drive away, while shopping centres, cinemas, and houses of worship are within 15 minutes' transport.
Cook's River Cycleway, Rookwood Necropolis (one of the best surviving examples of a Victorian cemetery in the world), and Paddy's Flemington Markets are all nearby.
One of Sydney's biggest and best clothing/homewares disposal complexes, Direct Factory Outlet (DFO), is near Olympic Park, and can be reached by car or bus.
Homebush West has many Chinese/Vietnamese restaurants and a bottle shop, plus a newly-opened Sri Lankan/Indian take-away. Just 2 suburbs west is wonderful Turkish food, and 1 suburb east are Sri Lankan and Indian restaurants.
Amazingly, considering the low tariff and comfortable accommodation, we're no more than 40 minutes from Sydney's downtown, with all its exciting sights and events, like the Opera House and the Harbour.

No pets are allowed in "Mum's House"; however, they're happily welcomed into my house, on the same property. I know not all pets would be comfortable with that arrangement, but it has happened successfully in the past. There is a large, clean, comfortable outdoor kennel, and a trampoline-type bed can be provided for the guest to put anywhere outside. The owner of the property occasionally cares for RSPCA dogs, but if that is a problem (to a guest's dog or to the owner's visiting dog) the owner would not take an RSPCA dog for that period. The garden is relatively roomy, and completely securely fenced. There are local leash-only parks, and unleashed parks within a 5-km. radius.
