Cottage

Steele's Island is a beautiful, privately owned island which consists of seventeen acres of natural flora and fauna. It is a unique holiday destination, in that its idyllic location is secluded, yet central to the state's capital city and most popular tourist attractions and destinations and airport, yet near all those handy, essential services.

Guests experience tranquility and privacy and are provided with the opportunity to relax, refresh and rejuvenate whilst on a 'hideaway' holiday or touring the state.

The cosy Beach Cottage, situated right on the beach on the northern end of the island, is ideally located for peace and privacy and exposure to breathtaking views of the river estuary and ocean. Hobart's majestic Mt. Wellington provides a truly scenic backdrop for a colourful array of magnificent sunsets.

The two-bedroom cottage is very comfortably furnished and equipped with all the modern conveniences. It has a spacious kitchen, dining and lounge room and a laundry/bathroom. One of the bedrooms has a double bed with electric blanket and the other has two sets of bunks (four singles). One of the two divans in the loungeroom converts to a double bed.

All linen is provided and continental breakfast provisions are available upon request.

The two cottages on the island are a short distance from one another and are ideal for 'discounted dual hire' for the larger families or groups of travellers or friends.

Walk along the beach, around the island, or go swimming, surfing, golfing, fishing or birdwatching. Visit the local award winning wineries, fruit farms or local restaurants and pubs. Take easy day tours of many of Tasmania's most popular tourist attractions, destinations and wilderness areas.

Lay back in absolute privacy and enjoy the sounds of the kookaburras and seagulls and the waves on the shore, or simply experience the unique location and wonderful natural surroundings. This is nature at its very best....as it is meant to be!

Locality

Steele's Island is situated on the popular Southern Beaches area of Tasmania. Located right on the beach at Carlton, it overlooks the Carlton River Estuary, the ocean and Carlton Beach.

The Island is accessible by causeway and bridge at all times of the year and is only two minutes drive from all those local services that are so handy when on holiday, such as a bakery, butcher, supermarket, delicatessen, pharmacy, doctor, service station, takeaway shop, beauty salon, restaurant, cafe and pubs.

Only twenty minutes from the airport, it is ideal for guests arriving in the state by air. Ideally located just thirty five minutes from the state's capital, Hobart, guests are able to visit the city's historic and beautiful waterfront and attractions, enjoy the breathtaking views from Mt. Wellington and visit Salamanca Market.

The popular historic township of Richmond and the Coal River Valley wineries are only twenty five minutes away and the state's most popular and award winning tourist attraction, Port Arthur, is within reach in just fifty five minutes.

Steele's island is an ideal base for travellers wishing to visit most of the tourist attractions in the southern region of the state. Day trips can be easily undertaken to Freycinet on the scenic east coast, Tahune and Hastings Caves in the Huon Valley,to Bruny Island, to Cradle Mountain and the Derwent Valley or Maria Island.

Property

Steele's Island is steeped in history.

It was 'home' to many different tribes of indigenous families for over forty thousand years. As a result, one of the most classical and beautiful examples of a 'midden' exists on the southern end of the Island.

One of the first settlers in the Carlton area during the early convict period, Joseph Steele, who came from England via Norfolk Island with his family, owned the Island - hence it's name. Joseph, who is buried in the local cemetary with some of his family membters, was a good 'mate' of O'Hara Booth, one of the commandants at Port Arthur at the time. Joseph often provided a bed and 'rum refreshments' in the home he built on the banks of the Carlton River to the military officers and free settlers who travelled between the penal settlement and Hobart town.

Only three dwellings have been constructed on the Island. A large Beach Homestead which accommodates the larger groups, and the two Beach Cottages. This allows guests to experience the serenity and privacy provided by the Island, which has been maintained in a near natural state of seventeen acres of Tasmanian flora and fauna.

The Island is home to many species of wild birdlife as well as protected native animals.

It is hoped, in the future, that an interpretation centre can be erected to celebrate the historical connections and natural aspects of the Island and to share this interesting information with guests.
