Steele's Island is a unique, little known, privately owned island consisting of seventeen acres of natural flora and fauna, totally surrounded by sandy shores, in the popular Southern Beaches area on the picturesque South East Coast of Tasmania.

No ferries or flights are necessary as it is easily accessible at all times of the year via a causeway and bridge.

Breathtaking sunrises and sunsets, together with panoramic water views, create the perfect setting for an unforgettable break away with family, friends or colleagues all year round.

Guests on the Island experience serenity, seclusion and somewhat secrecy, created by the sheltered bay on one side of the island, and the Carlton River Estuary, Carlton Bluff and Carlton Beach on the other.

The large Beach Homestead, with its homely, warm ambience and rustic charm, offers comfortable and spacious accommodation for groups of up to 25 people, depending on preferred sleeping arrangements.

The Homestead has a large delightful, fully equipped country kitchen, spacious laundry, huge lounge with a raised open fireplace, bar alcove, enclosed sunny verandah and a games room with an eightball/table tennis table.

There are seven bedrooms containing six double beds, 13 single beds and 3 cots. All bedding and linen is provided.

Outdoor facilities include a bayside barbeque area, beachfront decking, tennis court, mini golf course, sand volley ball area, large outdoor spa and kayaks with life jackets. Fishing rods are provided for those keen to fish in the river or at the beach.

Just twenty minutes from the airport, the island is located on the convict trail and is close to several of Tasmania's most popular tourist destinations and award winning vineyards and a range of restaurants and eateries.

Whilst it is somewhat secluded, it is only minutes away from handy local services, such as a bakery, butcher, delicatessen and supermarket, petrol outlet, pubs, takeaway shop, newsagent and post office, pharmacy, doctor and massage centre.

Centrally located, it is only 20 minutes from the airport and 35 minutes from Hobart, the state's capital city, which has a magnificent waterfront, majestic Mt. Wellington, the delightful Salamanca Market and popular Cascade Brewery.

Port Arthur, the state's most popular tourist attraction, is located just 50 minutes south of the Island, whilst the historic township of Richmond Village is just 25 minutes to the east.

Daytrips can be made to other popular destinations, such as, the Tahune Airwalk, Hastings Caves and the Thermal Pool in the Huon Valley, Mt. Field National Park in the Derwent Valley and Maria Island and Freycinet on the East Coast.

Fruit and fish farms are also within 10-20 minutes drive.

Property

Steele's Island is steeped in history.

Indigenous families lived on the Island for thousands of years, and, as a result, a classical, well recorded, and protected middens still exists on the southern end of the Island.

The Island was part of a parcel of land purchased by Joseph Steele, one of the first settlers in the area during the early convict period. Joseph, an English Naval Lieutenant, came to the Carlton area from England, via Norfolk Island, where he witnessed the harsh conditions endured by convicts and decided to retire from the navy. He was a good 'mate' of O'Hara Booth, a commandant at Port Arthur at the time, and offered military officers and free settlers travelling from Port Arthur to Hobart town a bed and 'rum refreshments' to make their journey more comfortable and enjoyable!
