Shady Brook at Harrietville only 22kms from Bright and 30kms from Mt Hotham. Its 1km off the Great Alpine Road and is set in a magnificant setting of river and surrounding mountains.
Harrietville is a true Mountain Villiage with excellent road access from all major cities
The 14 acre property is secluded yet only walking distance to the township. The garden is a paradise for birds and native fauna and contains 1000s of exotic trees and flowering shrubs giving something special all year around. Autumn has to be seen in its many colours and lazy days. Winter often has snow on the lower hills and Mt Hotham and Falls Creek are all within easy reach. Spring is a blaze of colour from 1000s of shrubs. Summer the roses are superb and cool mountains and streams are walkers and anglers paradise.
Steep mountains rear up immediately behind your cottage from the river flats. Clothed in native bush with private walking tracks to old Gold mines of an earlier era. Great views and glimpes of lyrebirds are all there.
The cottages are supebly furnished and maintained. All your linen is provided and each cottage has its own deck and BBQ. Shady Brook is truely unique and one of those special places people come back to.
Sit on the deck, enjoy a wine from local vineyards and hear the mountain river running, the birds singing whilst you take in the sun setting on Mountain ranges.
Shady Brook offers all year around accommodation and local activities from wine touring, bush walking, fishing, snow skiing, four wheel drives, sight seeing. Moree adventurous activities are all available in the area from rock climbing to paragliding or take a day trip in a local four wheel tour.
LocalityHarrietville is situated on the Great Alpine Road midway between Bright and Mt Hotham 25 and 30km respectively. Its also about 1 hours drive from Mt Buffulo and Falls Creek mountain and ski resorts.
The Alpine National Park comes right onto the edge of Harrietville and many Alpine Walking Tracks commence from the town.
Harreitville is divided by the two arms of the Oven River they provide excellent fishing and indeed walking along tin the warmer months. There are many other streams within easy reach.
The area was a gold mining centre and there are still a few active mines today. Harrietville has been blessed with two very large Dredge holes which have been re vegetated to make a beautiful lake for fishing and swimming or relaxing around. It has some easy walks around the lake whith edges on to the national park.
History abounds and Beechworth is only a little over an hour away. And there are many well known vineyards all within an hours drive as well as many goumet retreats and restaurants.
After a short climb by car or by legs and the high plains spread out from the Great Alpine Road in all directions. There are short and long walks from easy to hard grades. Car visits to Dargo, nestled into Great alpine range and famous for its cattle is only an hour away.Dinner Plain the highest permanent town in Australia is 45km away with pubs and eating houses and again shortwalks.
Harrietville itself has a number of alternative dining alternatives and the lavender farm provides light meals. The local icecreamery is also very popular
Bright only 25kms away has a concentration of top class restaurants wine bars, its own botique brewery and shops of interest.
For the bird watcher or keen photographer there is also plenty to do as the area abounds in natural beauty and large numbers of native birds, fauna and also large populations of introduced and now feral deer.
Shady Brook on request can organise four wheel drive and other activity tours as well as bike, walking and canoeing. PropertyWhen you enter the little laneway that brings you into Shady Brook, you know something special is about to happen. Trees line both sides and ahead lays the river.
You cross the Ovens River into the property over an historic "Bailey Bridge" into a stunningly green all year round river flats that immediately takes on the look of very large park.
Ahead of you are plantings of many different exotic trees and Shrubs. The mountain falls steeply to one edge of this park cloaked in beautiful gums.
and ferns.
The garden has been extensively landscaped and planted out in both native and exotic plants. Camellias, Rhododenrons, azaleas, viburnums roses and many other abound.
Your cottage is tucked away privately in the rear of this 5 acre garden on the foot of the hill and within 30 to 80 metres from the river. Your cottages have been designed to blend in to this environment so you can soak it all up.
Spaced around the property are areas you sit as you wander. Birds of all types abound, maybe you can glimpse one of the many lyrebirds or if early a wallaby.
Most comments in our guest book talk about this special place where the busy person can relax, the garden, the cottages themselves, their appointment and cleaniness and so many who come back year after year
There are private walking tracks going up into the hill. Here you can sit at intervals and take in the views of Feathertop on your way to the old disused gold mines.
