The House. Three-level, 175m2 (1900 sq ft) fully furnished pole house in the Tasmanian highlands above Bream Creek, facing NE, capturing the sun. Three decks, heaps of light and fabulous views of Marion Bay and the ocean beyond. 45 minutes and yet light-years east of the Hobart (International) Airport. Peaceful, exhilarating, serene. This truly original holiday house is ideal for a small or large family or up to three couples. Fully equipped modern kitchen including dishwasher, full-size refrigerator, large stove, oven, microwave, etc. Laundry and clothes dryer. Large, open-plan lounge/dining room with TV (with reception!), DVD, stereo CD, etc.; 8-person wrap-around couch; full-size dining table, built-in book cases, writing desk, and reading alcove with extensive books. Hardwood floors with Oriental rugs throughout. Ceiling fan and skylights in 2-storey cathedral ceiling. Three large decks (total 97 m2; 1000 sq ft): two levels of wrap-around decks overlooking the property, Wielangta Forest and down to Marion Bay, Cape Bernier, Maria Island and the Tasman Sea; the third secluded on the shaded west side of the house. Outside tables and chairs for dining on the sunny main deck, plus a Cape Hatteras hammock and a trampoline built into the hillside.
The property was beautiful with sweeping views of the bush, bay & Maria Island. A lovely location to relax & explore the scenic coastline & forests. A top spot, definately worth a visit! Bryony Jan 08 Rating 5/5
What a relaxing holiday! The wildlife, views & log fire were fantastic. The possum at dinner was a regular. We took DVDs and only watched one! My favourite: enjoying a glass of port in front of the fire. Nicole Apr 08 5/5
We greatly enjoyed our stay at your beautiful property. Sally Jul 08 5/5
Land for WildlifeWielangta is 40 acres of heavenly private property with abundant wildlife including falcons, eagles, kookaburras, quolls, bandicoots, wombats, potoroos, wallabies and pademelons. The property has recently been approved and added to the Tasmanian Land for Wildlife scheme. We are actively working with Land for Wildlife and the Understorey Network to create better land for native wildlife connected with Wielangta Forest. Three creeks cross the property, and there are two dams (ponds). The garden area has an abundance of native shrubs and trees including grevillea and callistemon (bottlebrushes) set against Wielangta Forest. Yes, there was recently a bush fire in parts of Wielangta Forest to our north, but thankfully Wielangta Forest has been saved. You can watch the sun rise out of the ocean each morning, and the moon over the evening ocean, from the decks and from elsewhere on the property. Birders bring your guidebooks, and look for brown falcons, boobooks, yellow-tailed black cockatoos and many different varieties of robins including the flame and dusty robin. Whale watchers grab your binoculars.
This is an eco-friendly house and property. The house was built from natural materials, much of it recycled polished timber. All rainwater is collected and used. Heating (only necessary in winter) is by a huge wood combustion stove, with cut wood immediately available. There are bush walks on the property and throughout the adjacent Wielangta Forest, home to the magnificent Eucalyptus Regnans (the tallest flowering plant on earth) as well as the rare and endangered Swift Parrot (a migratory parrot for whom Wielangta is its breeding stronghold) and Tasmanian Wedge-tailed Eagle. Out of respect for the wildlife, and future guests, no pets and no smoking. However, a bottle of local wine from one of our nearby boutique wineries is presented on arrival! The VacinityWielangta is due east of Hobart and the International Airport (65 min flying time from Melbourne, 1 hr 50 min from Sydney). It is east of Sorell (medium-sized shopping town with all conveniences) and just northeast (and upland) from the Copping Roadhouse (local store, petrol, etc.). The Bream Creek/Marion Bay area has been an inspiration for painters, potters, furniture makers, writers, folk musicians and poets for decades. The area connects the East Coast to the Tasman Peninsula, and is an ideal location just to relax and unwind, or as a stepping-off point for bush walking in Wielangta Forest (a magnificent rain forest with some of Tasmania’s tallest Blue Gum trees), surfing along the sensational coastline at Marion Bay surf beach, exploring the Long Spit Nature Reserve (home to pelicans, black swans, fairy penguins, sea eagles and other coastal birds) or a day of visiting galleries and tasting wine at Bream Creek, Cape Bernier, Sugarloaf Ridge and other local vineyards. End your day on the main deck, overlooking the ocean, or enjoy some local fare in one of the many fine restaurants in nearby Dunalley and Eaglehawk Neck. Wielangta is also ideal as a central base for visiting Maria Island National Park, the Forestier Peninsula, Tasman National Park, Fortescue Bay, Cape Huay, the Tasmanian Devil Park, Port Arthur and the numerous bush walks along the highest sea cliffs in Australia on the rugged coastline of the Tasman Peninsula, or attending the annual Bream Creek Show held every March for over 100 years. We know the area intimately, have books of day and longer walks in the area and further afield, and are happy to offer suggestions for all kinds of vacations.
