Take a short stroll across the meadow, past the penguin burrows to the beach and feel the pristine white quartz sand massage your toes.
Venture across the sand bar at low tide and visit Diamond Island, a protected sanctuary for the Fairy Penguins.
Swim the crystal clear water, surf Redbill beach, explore the rock pools, sift through the seashells, sunbake in the sand dunes or just relax on the spacious deck at 'The Retreat' with a glass of chilled Tasmanian wine.
If you are lucky you may spot dolphins playfully frolicking in the shelter of Diamond Island or perhaps even a whales on their migration down the East Coast of Tasmania.

'The Retreat' provides quiet, comfortable self contained accommodation for up to 5 people in an idyllic and picturesque setting, 2 klm from the East coast township of Bicheno.

Cook for yourself at 'The Retreat', either indoors or on the outdoor gas bbq. Alternatively venture into the township for a counter meal or enjoy French cuisine at the local French restaurant. If you don't fancy driving, the best restaurant on the east coast is 5 minutes walk away! The chef at 'Facets' restaurant specialises in dishes that focus on local seafood, beef, fruits, wines and cheeses. It is Tasmania's tamed cuisine at its very best.

About Bicheno


Situated an equal distance from the capital city of Hobart in the South and the northern city of Launceston, Bicheno is a popular holiday destination for Tasmanian and interstate visitors alike. This part of Tasmania enjoys its own Mediterranean microclimate. It is degrees warmer the rest of Tasmania all year round. It is out of the rain shadow of the west coast and the highlands and its nooks and crannies are where savvy Tasmanians go for rest and recreation. Originally a whaling town Bicheno is now home to a thriving fishing industry and is a vibrant tourist destination. Bicheno provides a perfect base for exploring the unspoilt beauty of the East Coast of Tasmania. The Apsley Gorge National Park, the breathtaking Freycinet Peninsula and the quaint Coles Bay township are all a short drive from Bicheno. Penguin tours (bookings required) are held nightly all year round 5 minutes walk from this magical location.
Diving and fishing charters operate out of Bicheno and a glass bottom boat shows off the magnificence of the kelp forests that grace the East Coast of Tasmania.

Bicheno Attractions


Bicheno has a wide range of activities to cater for every taste and budget – your hardest decision will be deciding how to spend your time.
For golfing enthusiasts the Bicheno Golf Club is a flat but challenging 9 hole, par 36 course that is adjacent to the beach and surrounded by beautiful native trees. If you fancy a hit of tennis there are courts located in the main town centre.
For those with a love of the sea, saltwater and freshwater fly fishing tours are available, or if you prefer to be under the water the Bicheno Dive Centre offers scuba diving lessons and equipment hire, with two dive boats operating daily.
Bicheno has many walking tracks and lookouts that offer spectacular views and Douglas Apsley National Park and Freycinet National Park are both within a 20 minute drive.
Families are well catered for in Bicheno with a range of activities including penguin tours, and a local wildlife park that is home to many Australian animals such as wombats, possums, kangaroos and emus. The Sea Life Centre is within walking distance of 'the Retreat' and has an exhibition of live Tasmanian fish, seahorses and many other surprises. It also includes a touch pool for children to handle a range of underwater creatures.
The main town centre has a range of craft shops, an art gallery, bakery, cafes, restaurants and many hidden treasures that are worth exploring at your leisure. If you want to e-mail friends or search the internet during your stay there is an Online Access Centre located in the main town centre.
The East Coast is also home to many of Tasmania’s fine vineyards which are well worth visiting.

$160 per night SEPTEMBER to NOVEMBER and MARCH to MAY;
$200 per night DECEMBER to FEBRUARY.
