Come here to relax, unwind and indulge! Enjoy the peace of a farmland setting with magnificent bushland views, just 6km drive from Beechworth. Facilities include: library of interesting books, TV, dvd and cd player/radio; queen size bed with quality linen (with additional double fold-out sofa bed); split system air conditioning; outside bbq area; kitchenette with micrwave/convection oven, hotplates and sandwich maker; ensuite and portacot & highchair upon request.

We have lots of people coming for one night, who end up staying two, and people coming for a weekend who return at some later stage for a week (or send their friends to us)!

Locality

Candlebark Cottage is 6km from Beechworth in the beautiful Wooragee Valley (less than 10 minutes in the car from Beechworth). We are on the doorstep of Chiltern Pilot National Park and there are lots of great cycling/riding/walking tracks nearby for exploring.

Property

Candlebark Cottage is situated on a 75 acre farm in scenic Beechworth countryside. From the cottage you can view our sheep, cows and small vineyard, or feel free to go for a wander for a closer look! We have been busy planting native trees and shrubs to make our property more wildlife friendly and scenic.

We have very good birding on our 150 acre property, with remnant vegetation fenced from livestock and enhanced with understorey plantings, along creeklines and in paddock blocks, in addition to a high conservation value roadside nearby.
Listen carefully for the rare barking Owls (one guest called an owl to the cottage with a bird call tape - it was very exciting!)

We are located within 5 minutes drive of Chiltern Mount Pilot National Park and can recommend lots of great places to visit, including lookouts, waterfalls, birdwatching sites and wildflower sites.

We have a strong sustainability ethic. Candlebark Cottage is built from rough sawn locally grown Blue Gum, with the verandah paved with second hand bricks and poles selectively harvested from regrowth on a local farm. We have installed an extractor fan in the roof, which greatly reduces the need for airconditioning. All windows and doors in the cottage are re-used from old buildings in the locality. Cleaning products used are all biodegradable and low phosphorous. We provide recycling. We are members of Greenfleet, where our vehicle emmissions are offset so that we are carbon neutral. Our property is registered with Land for Wildlife, and we have devoted one third of our land to conservation, involving protecting remnant vegetation and revegetating to provide habitat. We have wonderful birdlife as a result.

Farmland Experiences

Farm animals live on the property, Sheep, Cattle, Horses, Dogs, Other farm animals, Guests able to interact with the farm animals.

We have a small flock of fifty sheep, sheparded by Andy the alpaca, whose job is to prevent foxes making off with newborn lambs in spring. We have a few cows and two horses who can take as much patting as you can give...big gentle Charlie (half Clydesdale) and little Tuppence (shetland) who is living proof that size doesn't matter when it comes to being the boss. You are welcome to go for a walk to have a closer look at the livestock, or just stay on the cottage side of the fence and view the farm from there.

We welcome all guests and do not suffer from any prejudices in this regard! We are a couple with young children and have gay and lesbian friends.

Romantic getaway

Candlebark Cottage is a romantic getaway, offering privacy and a real sense of getting away from it all. While we do not have a spa or a wood fire, we do have a fantastic verandah with a marvellous view to take in, and our own and other local wine for sale to enjoy on the comfy cane chairs on the verandah. Or you could snuggle up on the lounge with a good magazine or book - we have an extensive library (a whole wall of books and magazines)!

Wine Appreciation

We have a small vineyard near the cottage which you are welcome to stroll through, and chat with us about our grapes. We grow Cabernet Savignon and Shiraz, and have our wine made by a local winemaker under the label 'Weeping Grass Creek'. Kick back on the verandah and enjoy a glass of our red...life is good!
