Holiday house, Holiday unit, Self-contained apartment

The recently rebuilt Lodge (Jan 2008) commands an absolute riverfront position on the southern bank of Arthur River, just upstream of where it flows west into the pounding surf of the Southern Ocean.

The Lodge consistently exceeds the expectations of its guests, some of whom state that this was their best accommodation in Tasmania (see unsolicited testimonials).

The Lodge can be rented as a single large property, or each Unit separately.

The unusual and stylish design of the Lodge was significantly influenced by the sprawling family "shack" from which it was developed and by the wish to showcase the view, whilst trapping the warmth of the sun. The result is a one-of-a-kind design, with interesting and varied angles inside and out. The visual impact of the unusually spacious living areas is enhanced by their high, raked ceilings, exposed beams and by the clean modern decor.

Both of the sunny living/kitchen/dining rooms and the extensive front patio look out to the north and west over the stupendous view of the ocean and Arthur River. Few properties in Tasmania could claim a better ocean/river view from both inside and out. The patio is sheltered from the south and south-west winds. Market umbrellas provide shade.

The Lodge won 2 awards:a national one for accessible accommodation (Downstream Unit), and one for the best large group accommodation in Tasmania.

Each unit is a sun-trap. Even it is freezing outside, you will be warm, as the units are well insulated and heated throughout. Both of the spacious living/kitchen/dining rooms have a wood stove for which wood is provided. Alternatively, use the reverse-cycle air-conditioning. The 2008 rebuild included completely new kitchens, quality new furnishings, fittings and decoration throughout.

The entire Lodge is ideal for 2 families, or for groups up to 12, if the double sofa bed is used in the main room of the Upstream Unit. An internal connecting door gives easy access between the 2 main rooms.

Locality

The Arthur River village is the only easily accessed settlement that faces the Southern Ocean on the Tasmanian West Coast. The village straddles the mouth of the wild and undammed river, in the middle of the extensive Arthur-Pieman Conservation Area.

Wild life abounds in and around the village, which animals treat as part of their home. A large wombat lives in the storm drain beside the Lodge and frequently ambles across the front lawn which is mowed by the wallabies. A spotted quoll has been, well, spotted crossing this lawn. The property just across the river from the Lodge is famed for viewing devils in the wild. There is plenty of bird life.

The village is a great, but little-known destination for fishermen, with trout in the river and good beach and rock fishing.

The coast north of the village is famed for its surf, which attracts national wave-sailing and surfing events. At other times uncrowded breaks are a certainty.

The coast is a favourite for beach-driving and has some really challenging 4 wheel drive tracks.

Roads connect the village to the Tarkine Forest inland. Alternatively, you can experience the Tarkine by taking a boat 15km up the river. If you prefer being hosted, catch the characterful MV George Robinson which leaves the village for upriver most mornings, except in mid winter.

There are many attractions in a 100km radius, including pretty, historic Stanley and the huge dairy and wind farm at Woolnorth, right on the top left hand corner of Tasmania.

An excellent sealed road reaches the village from the north. The scenic Western Explorer road continues south from the village to Strahan and Southern Tasmania. This road is mainly unsealed, but is well-maintained and suitable for a 2 wheel drive car.
