Cottage, Holiday house, Bed & Breakfast

This cosy, traditional Tasmanian coastal holiday house is the highest on the south side of Arthur River.

The sunny northerly, elevated outlook gives a magnificent view. Enjoy view and sun inside or on the large, raised deck, looking out over the river, sea and surrounding wild Arthur-Pieman Conservation Area. This is truly a panorama. The cottage is set back from the road, in its own grassy garden

The spacious main room, a recent addition, looks out over the view, from east through north and to west, over the sea. It is heated by a thermostatically-controlled forced air wall unit. There are dining and living areas and a well-equipped kitchen.

A second living area adjoins the main room. This has a slow combustion wood stove for which wood is provided and part of this room, which has a double sofa bed, can be curtained off as a third sleeping area.

There are 2 bedrooms, one with a queen size bed: the other has a single and 2 bunk beds.

There is a laundry, enclosed garage and quite large, sheltered sunporch, equipped with a gas barbecue and a table and chairs. The bathroom and WC are separate.

About Arthur River

The Arthur River village is the only easily accessed settlement that faces the Southern Ocean on the Tasmanian West Coast. It straddles the mouth of the wild and undammed Arthur River, which traverses the Tarkine Forest.

The village is surrounded by the extensive Arthur-Pieman Conservation Area, which abounds with wildlife. The animals treat the village as part of their home. Wombats have burrows in many places in the village and, along with wallabies, are seen frequently. Spotted quolls and Tasmanian devils live within or walk through the village, mainly at night. The property just on the north side of the river is famed for viewing devils in the wild. Contact Geoff King well in advance for a special experience (+61 (0)3 6457 1191, or jonesking@tassie.net

The Arthur River is a little known, but great destination for fishermen, with trout in the river and good rock and beach fishing.

The coast just north of the village is famed for its surf, so that each year, there are national wave-sailing and surfing events. At other times breaks are uncrowded.

The wild coast of sweeping, long beaches, rocky outcrops and coves on either side of the river mouth is easily reached on foot from the village. Further afield there are many points where the coast is easily accessed by road

Roads connect the village to the Tarkine Forest inland. Alternatively, you can experience the Tarkine by taking a boat 15 km up the river. If you prefer being hosted, catch the characterful MV George Robinson for a river cruise, which leaves from the village most mornings, except in mid-winter +61 (0)3 6457 1158. Book well in advance.

There are many attractions within a 100km radius, including pretty, historic Stanley and the huge dairy and wind-farm at Woolnorth, right on the top left hand corner of Tasmania.

An excellent sealed road reaches the village from the north. The Western Explorer road continues south from the village to Strahan and Southern Tasmania. Though mainly unsealed, it is suitable for a 2 wheel drive car.
